This indicator tracks the percentage of privately owned light-duty vehicles (passenger cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks) in the city that are zero-emission (battery-electric or fuel-cell) or plug-in hybrid. The City's underlying goal is for electric vehicles to account for 16% of all miles driven by light-duty vehicles by 2030 and 25% by 2035 — but since data on actual miles driven by vehicle type is not readily available, electric vehicle ownership is used as a practical proxy. Note that the percentages shown reflect the share of registered vehicles, not market share of new vehicle sales.
