This indicator shows the annual total of new and improved bikeways (in miles) per classification. The classifications are:
- Bike paths (Class I) are paved paths exclusively for cyclists, pedestrians, and non-motorized travel, physically separated from vehicle traffic. They provide key connections where roadways are absent or unsuitable for cycling.
- Bicycle lanes (Class II) are portions of a roadway designated for bicycle travel through striping and signage, running one-way on either side of the street.
- Cycle tracks (Class IV) are physically separated from both motor traffic and the sidewalk—using posts, parked cars, or a combination—offering the highest level of protection of the three types.
