Official description

Partner with public safety to review and reform education programs and enforcement policies related to pedestrian and traffic safety.
(Full action name in the CAP)

Description

Improving safety in the city can encourage more people to walk, roll, or bike to their destinations. Education programs are ongoing, but they vary each year depending on funding availability. We currently have two grants from California's Office of Traffic Safety, managed by the San Diego Police Department. These grants, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program and the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), run until September 2024. The Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program focuses on education and outreach through classroom sessions, bike rodeos, community events, presentations, and workshops. The City contracts with local non-profits like the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and Circulate San Diego to implement these programs. The STEP grant funds public safety officers to identify and address violators endangering pedestrians and bicyclists, primarily focusing on drivers. Additionally, the grant supports public education efforts, such as setting up information booths at local farmer's markets, to promote pedestrian and bicycle safety.
