The solid waste diversion rate refers to the amount of waste that does not end up in the landfill. The California Integrated Waste Management Act (Assembly Bill 939) requires that every jurisdiction in California must divert at least 50% of its waste stream away from landfills either through waste reduction, recycling or other means. The City of San Diego already surpasses that requirement, but is committed to continually improving its waste management practices to meet even more stringent thresholds. By doing so, not only do we fulfill regulatory mandates, but we also advance our climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfill waste.
