This indicator shows the estimated annual total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) within the City of San Diego.
Using a historical baseline, The City of San Diego has defined goals for reductions in total VMT by 2030 and 2035. They are as follows:
2030:
- 4% reduction in citywide vehicle miles traveled (GHG reduction of 181,205 MT CO2e)
- 8% reduction in per-capita vehicle miles traveled for all trips (GHG reduction of 341,724 MT CO2e)
2035:
- 6% reduction in citywide vehicle miles traveled (GHG reduction of 242,177 MT CO2e)
- 15% reduction in per-capita vehicle miles traveled for all trips (GHG reduction of 605,185 MT CO2e)
Transportation is one of the largest sectors that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The goals of 4% and 6% reduction in citywide VMT can be achieved by increases in remote working, accounting for 3% of all planned GHG reductions by 2035. The goals for reductions in per-capita vehicle miles traveled for all trips can be achieved through reducing the amount of driving done, accounting for 6-7% of all planned GHG reductions by 2035.
* The data shown below uses the most up to date calculations from any revisions made beyond the initial 2015 CAP Annual Report.
** VMT was calculated using the SANDAG Activity Based Model 2+ Release v14.2.2 and adjusted using VMT monitoring data from public road and freeway data derived from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Highway Performance Monitoring System (HMPS) and Performance Measurement System (PeMS).
