Official description

Through an update to the City’s administrative regulations, include purchasing requirements for sustainable products and food whenever option is available. 1) Reduce carbon and water footprint of total beef, pork, chicken, turkey and dairy purchases by 20%
2) Increase local, healthy, and sustainable foods to 20% of total food purchases prioritizing locally sourced, valued workforce and animal welfare
(Full action name in the CAP)

Description

The City's Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Program (EP3), established in 2007 with A.R. 35.80, requires City departments to consider products that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products that serve the same purpose.

Implementing this action to reduce the carbon and water footprint of animal product purchases is in alignment with EP3 and would have additional benefits to the local economy and the health of the City's workforce. The City will explore an update to EP3 to meet this goal.
