Environmental Services (ESD) staff is developing a plan to move more Greenery products and tailoring customer compost/soil blends by request. Increasing the awareness, use of, and demand for current Greenery products or tailored products produced within the City will include procurement targets, with a focus on the maintenance of street easements, parks, and other green spaces.
ESD's procurement target from CalRecycle for CY2025 is 112,000 procurement units (roughly equivalent to 65,000 tons of compost). ESD is working toward achieving that target on a number of fronts. The City is hosting 18 grant-funded compost giveaways to bring compost into the community and make it more accessible for residents between November 2024 – April 2026. City departments are working together to increase awareness of the benefits of compost and mulch and identify additional opportunities for compost and mulch use on City property including Parks and Recreation sites, Stormwater, Engineering and Capital Projects, and local farmland. Eight hundred thousand dollars of the SB 1383 CalRecycle grant is earmarked to be spent on spreading compost and mulch on City property. Staff is also working on developing Direct Service Provider agreements which is a CalRecycle requirement for procurement credits.
