Official description
Description
While many San Diegans desire more trees in their neighborhoods, planting trees at their residences, particularly in Communities of Concern, can be challenging. Barriers include the cost of trees and supplies, lack of knowledge about tree species and care, property ownership constraints, and maintenance needs such as watering and pruning. To address these challenges, the City is expanding its range of programs:
- If you are a property owner who wishes to select and plant your own street tree, the City will waive the permit application fee. See the No Fee Street Tree Permit Application for details.
- Free Tree SD offers free street trees to any San Diego resident upon request. The City will select and plant suitable trees for your residence, and you'll be responsible for watering them for three years during the establishment period. Check the project website to confirm eligibility and request a tree.
- The Trees for Communities project will initiate tree planting in three Priority Areas (see the maps below). The City will provide water to the new trees for the first three years and ongoing maintenance throughout their lifespan. Visit the project website for more information or to contact the Trees for Communities team.
